LET Level Syllabus

LET 1
Instructor: Sergeant First Class (Retired) Antonio Baez
Course Description: This course includes classroom and laboratory instruction in history, customs, traditions and the purpose of Army JROTC. It contains the development of basic leadership skills to include leadership principles, values, and attributes. Development of cores skills students should master, an appreciation for diversity, and active learning strategies are integrated through out the course. The performance standards in this course are based on the performance standards identified in the curriculum for the US Army JROTC. Successful completion of at least three units of credit in Army JROTC program will qualify the student for advanced placement in a college ROTC program or accelerated promotion in the military service.

Course Design: This class will be conducted in an interactive manner. Everyone will be responsible for contributing to the success of the learning experience. Lectures are expected to be interactive– ask questions. Cadets will have extensive small group discussions and exercises scattered throughout the class.

Required Materials: JROTC Textbook - LET I, and a JROTC uniform consisting of shoes, trousers/slacks, belt, buckle, shirt cap, and uniform accessories provided at no cost by the US Army. Cadets purchase a one-inch black binder to take notes in class and to serve as a leader’s book.

Grading Procedures: Cadets will be given chapter/unit tests following instruction and occasional quizzes on daily work. Hands on/practical tests will be given on drill, the manual of arms and leadership roles. Grades will be given for weekly uniform inspection (where cadets must also exhibit knowledge of current events, government and military organization), tests/quizzes, and participation in weekly physical fitness training with the required attire (Gym Short, T-shirt, and tennis shoes).

Successful completion of at least three units of credit in Army JROTC program will qualify the student for advanced placement in a college ROTC program or accelerated promotion in the military service.


LET 2
Instructor: Chief Warrant Officer 4 (Retired) - John Edmond
Course Description: This course includes classroom and laboratory instruction expanding on skills taught in LET 1. This course introduces equal opportunity and sexual harassment. It provides instruction on leadership styles and practical time to exercise leadership theories, as well as the basic principle of management, self assessments that help students determine their skill sets and opportunities to teach using accepted principles and Methods Of Instruction (MOI). The performance standards in this course are based on the performance standards identified in the curriculum for the US Army JROTC. Successful completion of at least three units of credit in Army JROTC program will qualify the student for advanced placement in a college ROTC program or accelerated promotion in the military service.

Course Design: This class will be conducted in an interactive manner. Everyone will be responsible for contributing to the success of the learning experience. LET 3
Instructor: Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Philip M. Pugh, Jr.
Course Description: This course includes classroom and laboratory instruction expanding on skills taught in LET 1-2. This course allows cadets to investigate the interrelationships of the services while it continues to build their leadership development and decision-making skills. It includes negotiation shills and management principles. It emphasizes staff procedures and provides opportunities to handle various leadership situations. The research, identification, planning and execution of service learning activities are included. It provides self assessments that help students determine their skill sets and opportunities to teach using accepted principles and methods of instruction. The performance standards in this course are based on the performance standards identified in the curriculum for the US Army JROTC. Successful completion of at least three units of credit in Army JROTC program will qualify the student for advanced placement in a college ROTC program or accelerated promotion in the military service.

LET 4
Instructor: Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Philip M. Pugh, Jr.
Course Description: This course includes classroom instruction and laboratory instruction expanding on the skills taught in LET1-3. It focuses on creating a positive leadership situation, negotiating, decision-making, problem solving, planning, team development, project management, and mentoring. It provides the opportunity to develop leadership potential in an assigned command or staff position within the cadet battalion organizational structure. It includes how to use emotional intelligence in leadership situations as well as developing positive attitude, preventing violence and managing anger. It provides instruction on etiquette, daily planning, financial planning and careers. Successful completion of at least three years of credit in Army JROTC program may qualify the student for advanced placement in a college ROTC program or accelerated promotion in the military service.

Hands-on/practical tests will be given on drill, the manual of arms and leadership roles. Cadets will receive grades for uniform inspections and participation in physical fitness training with the required attire (Gym shorts, T-shirt and tennis shoes). Online students will submit photos and evidence of participation in physical fitness (ie. fitness app record). In addition to tests, LET 4 cadets and those assigned to the cadet staff will be required to give oral presentations. Academic work is 40% of the course grade. Leadership and uniform grades are both 30% each.
Make-up policies: Make-up work will be accomplished per school policy

Key Dates: An annual training plan of events and a weekly training schedule of key activities are posted on the cadet bulletin board and website.
